Creating Your Senior Photo Session Look: Essential Dos and Don’ts

Choosing what you want to wear and how you want to look in your senior photos are two of the most important decisions you will make during the planning process. Your overall look sets the tone for all your photos, and it showcases who you are at this important stage of your life.

Whether your style is classic, casual, fashion-forward, athletic, or somewhere in between, the goal isn't to follow a set of rules. It's to create looks that feel authentic to you while also giving your senior session plenty of variety.

Creating Your Senior Photo Session Look

Here are some essential dos and don'ts to keep in mind as you plan what you'll wear for your senior portraits.

DO: Choose Outfits That Feel Like You

Your senior photos should reflect your personality. If you normally live in jeans and sneakers, you don't need to suddenly dress like someone you're not. Likewise, if you love dressing up, don't be afraid to bring something more polished and sophisticated.

The best outfits are the ones that make you feel confident and comfortable. When you look back at your portraits years from now, you'll want to see an authentic version of yourself.

DON'T: Bring Only One Outfit

One of the best ways to create variety in your senior gallery is to bring multiple looks. Consider bringing a combination of casual, dressy, and personality-driven outfits.

Different outfits can also completely change the feeling of your portraits. A simple change of clothing can give you a fresh look without ever leaving the location.

DO: Think About Color

Choose colors that complement your skin tone and make you feel good. Neutral colors can create timeless portraits, while bold colors can add personality and energy.

It's also worth thinking about the locations you've chosen for your session. An outfit that looks great against a neutral background may photograph very differently against a colorful or dramatic setting.

DON'T: Overdo Patterns and Logos

Patterns can absolutely work in senior portraits, but extremely busy patterns and oversized logos can become distracting.

If you're wearing something with a strong pattern or graphic, consider balancing it with simpler pieces. The goal is for the clothing to complement you rather than become the focus of the photograph.

DO: Bring Accessories

Accessories are a great way to add personality and variety. Jewelry, hats, jackets, sunglasses, shoes, and other meaningful pieces can all give your photographer additional options to work with.

You don't have to wear everything at once. Sometimes a simple accessory added or removed between photographs can create an entirely different look.

DON'T: Forget the Details

Small details matter in professional portraits. Make sure your clothing is clean, pressed, and free from lint, wrinkles, or loose threads.

Pay attention to shoes, jewelry, nails, hair, and anything else that will be visible in your portraits. Taking care of those details ahead of time will make your session day much less stressful.

DO: Consider Movement

Your senior session shouldn't feel like you're standing in one spot taking the same photograph over and over. You'll likely walk, sit, lean, turn, move, and interact with your surroundings.

Choose clothing that allows you to move comfortably. Dresses, skirts, jackets, and flowing fabrics can create beautiful movement, while clothing that is too restrictive can make posing feel awkward.

DON'T: Wait Until the Night Before

Give yourself plenty of time to decide what you're wearing. Try everything on before your session and make sure you feel comfortable moving around in each outfit.

If you're unsure about a particular outfit, bring it anyway. Your photographer can often help you decide which looks will work best with the locations, lighting, and overall vision for your session.

DO: Bring More Than You Think You'll Need

It's usually better to have a few extra options than to wish you had brought something different. Your photographer can help narrow things down once you arrive.

This is especially helpful when your senior session includes multiple locations or a variety of different looks.

Your Senior Session Should Be Personal

There really isn't one perfect way to dress for senior portraits. Your session should be built around your personality, your interests, and the way you want to remember this moment in your life.
