What Happens If It Rains on Senior Portrait Day?

You have planned the wardrobe, selected the location, and prepared for your senior portrait session—then rain appears in the forecast.

Do not panic. A forecast does not automatically mean the session must be canceled. The right decision depends on the amount of rain, wind, lightning, road conditions, location safety, and the type of portraits we are planning to create.

We Will Monitor the Weather Together

Weather forecasts can change quickly, especially in Southern Nevada. Rather than making a decision several days too early, we will continue monitoring the conditions as the session approaches.

A light, brief shower may be manageable. Thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, flash-flood warnings, muddy roads, or unsafe temperatures require a different approach. The safety of the senior, family, photographer, and equipment will always come first.

Light Rain Can Create Beautiful Portraits

When conditions are safe and the senior is comfortable, light rain can add atmosphere, reflections, texture, and movement to a portrait session.

A clear or carefully selected umbrella can become part of the photographs, while covered areas may allow us to continue working without exposing the senior or equipment directly to the weather.

This approach will not suit every wardrobe, hairstyle, location, or creative plan. We will decide together whether the rain complements the session or distracts from the experience the senior wants.

Wind May Be a Bigger Concern Than Rain

Strong wind can affect hair, clothing, lighting equipment, dust, and the senior’s comfort. In open desert locations, wind can also create blowing sand and reduced visibility.

Even when rain is minimal, significant wind may make an outdoor session unpleasant or unsafe. Weather decisions should consider the complete set of conditions rather than precipitation alone.

We May Adjust the Location or Timing

If one location is affected by weather, another part of the Las Vegas Valley may remain dry. Depending on availability and permit requirements, we may be able to adjust the starting time or select an alternate location.

Any indoor or covered location must be appropriate for professional photography. Hotels, cafés, shopping areas, casinos, museums, and other commercial properties are privately owned and may require advance written permission. We will not assume that professional photography is allowed simply because a location is open to the public.

Bring a Few Practical Backup Items

If uncertain weather is possible, it can help to bring:

  • An umbrella suitable for walking between locations
  • A towel for light moisture
  • Comfortable shoes for moving between portrait areas
  • A brush, comb, and simple hair products
  • Basic makeup or grooming items for touch-ups
  • A protective garment bag for clothing
  • An additional outfit that works in cooler or damp conditions

These items do not guarantee that we will photograph in the rain, but they can make minor weather changes easier to manage.

Rescheduling May Be the Best Decision

If the weather would compromise safety, comfort, equipment, or the quality of the finished photographs, rescheduling is the responsible choice.

The purpose of a personalized senior session is not merely to complete it on a particular date. It is to create an enjoyable experience and photographs that feel intentional. Forcing a session to continue in poor conditions can work against both goals.

A new date will depend on availability, location access, permits, and any deadlines connected to yearbooks, announcements, graduation products, or finished artwork.

A Backup Plan Is Part of Professional Preparation

Weather is one of many factors considered during The Senior Experience. We will discuss the location, season, wardrobe, timing, and alternative options before the session so an unexpected forecast does not leave you wondering what happens next.
